A Common Theme in Chick Flick Poster Design
I recently noticed that Pride and Prejudice had a very similar poster design to Atonement. Both shared a horizontal, central band holding the film’s title Kiera Knightly’s mugshot in the top right. Then last week, as I walked out of a screening of Super 8 i noticed a poster for the up-coming Jane Eyre; another period drama with a central, horizontal band. After a bit of digging I found that this layout isn’t unusual for chick flicks, usually using the band to contrast two characters or emotions. A friend pointed out that the genre was more specific than I had thought, it’s the more mature flicks that seem to adhere to the convention. Lazy design or a successful winning formula? Your choice.
